The Essentials -- We asked ourselves, "If we had a brand new Web site and a limited budget, which of the books on our bookshelf would contribute the most to our success?" The list became remarkably short.

Web Publishing Unleashed : Professional Reference
    by William Robert Stanek

ISBN: 157521198X

Considered by many to be the best printed resource for Web publishing and Internet solutions. The book is well organized and clearly written, giving both general background and specific examples of Internet technologies and their relationships to each other. Everyone with a Web site should have this tome on their bookshelf.

(Among other resources, the included CD contains the hypertext edition of Laura Lemay's "Teach Yourself HTML 3.2 in 14 Days, Professional Reference Edition.")

Site Management and Marketing -- In order to keep things current and to successfully market your site you will need the following tools. We're suggesting these four programs because of their reasonable cost, extended features and ease of use. We strongly recommend them all.

Allaire Homesite 3.0 HTML Editor
We think Homesite 3.0 is the best HTML text editor available. If you are going to keep your site current you want an Editor, not a WYSYWIG program that will mess up the code that is already there. We do all our work here at Tiptoe with Homesite and love the many ways it simplifies our tasks. You can purchase Homesite directly from Allaire or download the less robust Demo for a test drive.

Eudora Pro Email client v4.0
If you haven't already, do yourself a favour. Plunk down forty bucks and get the genuine article, the registered version, the one that comes with a manual. Read the manual. Become one of the few that have! Go to the front of the class. Email is the most important tool in you e-commerce tool box. You will be rewarded ten fold for your diligence!

WS_FTP Pro
"WS_FTP Pro is a Windows-based application for transferring files between your PC (the local system) and a remote system. Using WS_FTP Pro, you can connect to another system from your PC, browse directories and files on both systems, and transfer files between the systems."

A good HTML editor, like Homesite, provides features for site management but you will still want to have a FTP client at hand. There are a lot of different FTP clients available but WS_FTP is very stable, easy to configure and will handle file permissions with ease. The LE edition is free for non-commercial use and good for everything but the most advanced FTP tasks. The PRO edition provides drag and drop capabilities, resumes interrupted transfers and can prevent overwriting of same or newer files. Definitely worth the $37.50 registration fee.

Opera Version 3.0 Web Browser
What! Who needs another Web browser?
Well, maybe you do. Especially if you are using a 486 or even 386 and would like better features than Netscape 2.x can offer. The Opera browser has been written in original code so it doesn't suffer from obesity the way Netscape and IE do in trying to make the old Mosaic code jump through hoops. It also conforms strictly to the HTML standard (no special extensions), so if you are a Web developer and it runs on Opera, it should run on anything. JavaScript is supported but not JavaScript 1.1 and higher. We hope they move the JS bar higher in ver 4. Java is coming in ver 4. Opera is compact. It will fit on a 1.4 floppy with room left over for a HTML presentation. The list goes on. Visit their site to find out more. They say they want our input, which is refreshing, since Netscape and MS don't listen to anybody but their lawyers.

As Web designers we have to run just about every browser version from MS and Netscape in order to test our products. For just plain browsing the Web we find ourselves using Opera. Try it out. Heck, it installs faster than Communicator loads! (Windows only for now.)

Graphics -- Of course, the king of all image editors is PhotoShop but the investment is substantial and the learning curve is high. We've chosen two programs that won't break the bank, are user friendly and will give you professional results performing the basics.

Micrografx Picture Publisher 7

We got a registered copy of Picture Publisher bundled with a new video board. We are impressed with what we have found. With the explosion of the Web, most software companies are now building Web friendly features into their graphics packages. Picture Publisher 7 has an abundance of them. Wizards and online tutorials shorten the learning curve and the program complies to the Photoshop Plugins standard. This is a lot of software for US$99

Ulead Web Plugins

We feel the feature set of this group of plugins is perfect for Small Business Webmasters. You can create an infinite number of backgrounds, bevel any shape, add drop shadows, generate image map code with ease. Download the trial version before purchasing. (Requires PS Plugin compliant image editor.)

Research and Demographics

CyberAtlas: The Reference Desk for Web Marketing

Considered by Yahoo to be "Best of Class", this site is loaded with info on Web Usage, e-Commerce, browsers, software, etc. we have found the site to be agonizingly slow during business hours. Go there after dinner.

NUA Internet Surveys

Want the big picture? Here's a huge site with all kinds of demographic and usage facts. The articles are kept fairly current. We found some problems with the graphs, however. Many of them are over a year old with poor legends. Still, a good resource..

Cool List

This service provides free discussion lists. Cool List says they don't discriminate; anyone can join. Your list can be moderated or un-moderated. If you want to use it as a newsletter, we suppose you simply make it a moderated list and don't post any submissions from your subscribers. There is no mention of e-mail ceilings or frequency on the site, nor is the list owner interface shown. Sign up and find out! This looks like a pretty good deal (free usually does).
